1. Navigate to our [online updater tool](https://tools.modretro.com/updater) and follow your OS-specific setup instructions. A driver may be needed.

2. Remove the battery pack from the controller.

3. Connect one end of a USB cable to your computer. _Note: the M64 Console Power cable is power-only and not supported for this use._

4. Before plugging the other end of the USB cable into your controller, hold “L Bumper” and “D-Pad Right” on the controller simultaneously while inserting the other end of the USB cable into the controller.

    * Release the buttons after connecting.

    * If done properly, the left and right indicator LEDs on the controller will be lit.

5. Press “Connect Device” on your computer.

    * If the device does not appear in the updater UI, unplug and replug the USB cable and it should appear.

6. Select “DFU in FS Mode” then press “Connect.”

7. Ensure the device says “(Bootloader)” as part of its name.

8. Press “Recover” in your computer’s updater window.

9. Wait for the recovery to complete.

10. Follow the instructions in [Updating Your M64 Pro Controller](https://support.modretro.com/en_us/updating-your-m64-pro-controller-ryRxVUh7Me) to ensure all firmwares are up-to-date.
